NATIONAL MUSEUM OF RIO DE JANEIRO
PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF RIO DE JANEIRO/RJ
UNESCO – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
05/2021 – in course
In May 2021, Setec Hidrobrasileira was contracted by UNESCO to manage the reconstruction projects for the National Museum and the pre-consolidation and protection works for the integrated assets of Block 1 of the Paço de São Cristóvão and Jardim das Princesas, the headquarters of the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Block 1 housed the “historical rooms”, of which only remnants from the monarchical period remain.
After the fire on September 2, 2018, the “National Museum Lives” Project was created in March 2020, a cooperation between the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Vale Cultural Institute, with the mobilization of several partners for the reconstruction of the National Museum/UFRJ.
The project covers 16,260.63 m2, of which 8,351.87 m2 are to be restored and an expansion of 7,908.76 m2 is to be built.
The management contract foresees 18 months of studies, at the end of which all documents for the tendering of the main works should be prepared.
The work is divided into two Lots:
- Lot 1: Project management during the Basic Studies stage of the technical projects, consisting of a preliminary study and a preliminary project; management of the works to protect the integrated assets that survived the fire; monitoring of the works involving façades, roofs, masonry and slabs.
- Lot 2: Project management during the Legal Project and Executive Project stages of the technical projects, comprising pre-executive and executive phases; continued monitoring of the works involving façades, roofs, masonry and slabs
Total area = 16,260.63 m²

SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION
The reconstructed building will have the LEED® Silver Sustainability certification and is being designed in accordance with all the precepts of environmental performance, paying attention to energy efficiency elements, water saving, sustainable materials, indoor environmental quality, drainage and sustainable landscaping, among others.
The development and management of the projects are being carried out on an integrated BIM (Building Information Modelling) platform, including BIM 5D (Budgeting), using tools such as REVIT (Autodesk®), Bimtrack and Cintoo Cloud and Volare, which has brought great challenges for the teams involved. More than 1,000 documents have been developed so far, after the preliminary design stage.
