BELO HORIZONTE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

BASIC AND DETAILED DESIGNS FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO TERMINAL 1,
UTILITIES CENTER 1 AND SOCIAL ANNEX

BH Airport
October 2019 / Ongoing

Capable for processing 22 million passengers per year, The Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais is considered to be one of the main airports in operation in Brazil, being located between the principal economic centers of the country, in the RJ-SP hub. The project’s objective is to present alternative layouts, operational flows, and the retrofit of installations for exploring and making better usage of the spaces within the airport, optimizing spaces of the existing terminal and promoting improvements for the processing of passengers, while providing more comfort to the users.

Setec Hidrobrasileira, as part of the SETEC/FAA consortium, participated in the elaboration of the basic and detailed designs for improving the Passenger Terminal 1, the Utilities Center 1 and the Social Annex, which comprise the following phases:

Data collection; Programming the needs; Conceptual design; Basic design; Legal designs; Detailed designs; and technical assistance throughout the works (ATO).

  • Technical Assistance for the works;
  • Interface management.

BIM PLATFORM USAGE

The BIM platform is the flagship for the entire spatial analysis, mapping out the modifications in the terminal, starting with the collection of data, right up to the Basic Design. In the Detailed Design phase, the BIM  spreads out into all the disciplines where the focus is the final aligned spatial definitions, and the end objective will be the proper arrangement and control of all the inputs that are necessary for conducting the works.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Inspiration for the design process was collected from the traditions of the Minas Gerais State in synergy with a forward look into the future. In this regard, the actual Terminal 1 building was characterized as a referential and a solid base for exploring potentialities. Terminal 1 was built more than 30 years ago and its architecture and esthetics relates much to concrete. This fact is considered in the retrofit, and the intention is to not alter or conceal this in the appropriation and transformation of existing spaces, but  to harmonically compose it with new materials and textures.
